In Jenni’s year 9 class we have had lots of amazing opportunities recently which all the pupils have really enjoyed.

We have had Brendon teach us all about African Djembe drums, we learnt all about the different sounds you can make on a Djembe drum and how to show others how to drum out a beat on them using ‘pat ta, g’o dot” as a rhythm base.

We have been learning a lot about Africa and it’s cultural differences, we even made an African rice dish called Jollof which all the pupils made from healthy ingredients, making their own base sauce, adding it to rice and cooking it to coat the rice making a deliciously tasty dish for them to try and take home.

In English we have been focusing on opinions, leading us up to a class debate, pupils have had to provide positive and negative points on the topic of having an animal in the home, they have had to develop their thoughts and understand that they need to give information as well as opinions. This had led to some brilliant discussions on many topics with pupils beginning to learn the difference between their opinions and facts.

We have also been to Middlesbrough Sports Village to try our hand at Badminton. We had great fun moving around, swapping partners and developing our hand eye coordination. Pupils found they had great success with this activity and want to do more of it. Jenni taught us that if you follow the shuttlecock with your eyes, your arms automatically react and if your racket is facing the right way, you are more likely to hit the shuttlecock. This helped many of the pupils to improve their ability hit the shuttlecock back and forth creating a rally.
