Design and Technology

At Discovery, we equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to express themselves in different forms as well as access to therapies to support emotional regulation and mindfulness.  To allow all children the opportunity to succeed and have a sense of pride in their creative abilities. To allow children the opportunity to work with artists in and out of the academy to develop a creative community.

EYFS and Informal Pathway

Pupils develop their Design and Technology (DT) skills by exploring and creating with different materials. They learn to build, make, and design things using items like paper, cardboard, fabric, and simple tools. Through activities such as making models, designing simple structures, or creating moving toys, children practice problem-solving and creativity. They also learn to follow instructions and think about how things work. These hands-on experiences help children build their imagination, fine motor skills, and confidence in creating and designing.

Semi Formal Pathway

Intent in design technology (and through DT experiences and activities) A progressive Design and Technology curriculum is implemented which develops learning and results in the acquisition of subject knowledge, technical knowledge and vocabularyPupils will know more, remember more, do more in Design and Technology Pupils will be able to demonstrate their creativity through designing and making, and make connections between what they have previously learned and what they are currently learningIn DT, by the end of the semi-formal curriculum children will be able to: Investigate and evaluate simple products, commenting on the main features Combine materials, design and create products using different techniques and toolsFollow a simple recipe using correct techniques and tools

Knowledge organisers outline the key new knowledge for each unit and the prior knowledge needed for pupils to make meaningful connections to new learning.
