Staying active is really important for young people because it helps them stay healthy, both physically and mentally. It builds strong bones, muscles, and improves heart health. Being active also helps with focus, reduces anxiety, and can improve mood. It gives more energy, helps with sleep, and can make young people feel more confident. Plus, activities like sports teach teamwork and important life skills.
Physical Development Discovery
Here at Discovery, we offer lots of opportunities for pupils to explore and engage with different sporting events and activities.
We have ‘Live it and Get Active’ (LiGA) Multi-sport sessions once a week, where pupils and staff engage in different activities, having fun and exploring sports with guidance from an expert.
Many of our pupils take part in multi-sport events that are designed to bring different schools together. This allows us to support pupils to access different events, learn how to work on collaboration and teamwork, and celebrate each other and themselves for their achievements and effort.
We also take part in competitive fixtures against other schools, including Boccia and Football, enabling pupils to experience elements of competition in an environment suited to their needs and abilities.
We are very fortunate to also have the support of Middlesbrough Football Club who have committed to providing our football team with Football boots. Sarah Stones is a regular at Discovery, offering career advice to our older learners, and putting them through their paces on the pitch to develop their passion for football.
Pupils are provided with fantastic outside play provisions, with specific resources aimed at developing pupils’ abilities to climb, run, manoeuvre around obstacles and engage with peers across the different ages and stages. Pupils can also access bikes, trikes and scooters whilst outside during playtimes, this teaches pupils not only how to ride and maintain balance but also how to wait and respect each other whilst on the apparatus. For our older learners, we are taking part in Cycling Proficiency, meaning pupils learn how to ride bikes suited to their abilities and needs, resulting in certification.
